This beautiful, over-sized (11 x 18 inch) book includes excellent photographs of the original tables from Mascagni's Vasorum lymphaticorum corporis humani historia et Iconographia, which is still the best source of visuals on the lymphatic system. It is the author’s belief that the tracers used in imaging are routed in such a way that it is still not possible to improve on Mascagni’s original work and she wished to make those tables available in a usable format.
The book itself is printed on heavy stock to allow a lifetime of use. The purpose behind the over-sized publication was to preserve the art in the original tables, and open the doors to finish determining more exact routing of the lymphatic system. The book also includes detailing of the massage methodologies which were employed and led to her observations and subsequent research. The first printing is available in Chinese, Hindi, English and Spanish.
In her research and subsequent paper, Mascagni’s Table XIII shows clearly the previously unrecognized route of the lymphatic system to both kidneys and testicles. By identifying leukocytes in each bodily fluid, along with other research documented in this book, she substantiated the routing previously considered to be only to the thoracic duct to be in error.
Her continued fascination with finding external paths for the lymphatic system lead to her identifying most paths correlated with Chinese Meridians. Perceiving that those meridians correlated to lymphatic routing led her to recruit Bing You, M.D. (China) L. Ac., DAAPM, who drew the meridians on the applicable Mascagni’s tables. Both the original, and the composite meridian/Mascagni pictures are arranged in such a way that the book can be opened simultaneously.
Benge believes the importance of determining exactly what routes the lymphatic system takes will result in foundational changes in a variety of fields, including, at the least, lymphology, oncology, cardiology, ophthalmology, surgery (a greater awareness of how surgery can, and might not, disrupt the lymphatic system), otolaryngology, hematology, gynecology, endocrinology, Chinese Medicine, and massage. The effect of blockages within the lymphatic system will have significance within each of those fields.
